  • File photo, actual client loss

Winter is finally coming to NKY!  With this in mind, is your home prepared for the colder temperatures?

We often consider it wouldn’t happen to us.  Maybe you think your house is too new, has too many updates or is adequately insulated.  Truth is a frozen or burst water pipe can happen to anyone at anytime.  Granted, an older home with drafts and poor insulation is more susceptible than some newer homes, but no one is completely exempt from the dangers that may come with winter weather.  Even copper lines can break from the full force of expanding ice.  But, there are things you can do to help prevent this from ruining your day, or possibly your year depending on how long repairs may take to complete.

    • Insulate your pipes.  Pipe insulation can cost as little as 50 cents per linear foot at your local hardware store.
    • Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
    • Open cabinet doors that contain plumbing.  If there is a draft behind that cabinet door, allowing warm air from your home enter that cavity will aid in keeping your pipes warm.
    • Let the cold water drip from your faucet.  Keeping the water moving, even the slightest amount, can help prevent freezing within the pipes.
    • If you plan on leaving your home during the winter months, set your thermostat to 55 degrees or higher.
    • If you have noticed frost around one of your pipes, use a hair dryer or heating pad to thaw the water line.  Never use a blowtorch or lighter-this provides too much heat too fast and can weaken the pipe even more.
    • If you have a particular section of water piping which seems to be more susceptible to freezing, you may want to consider installing an electric heat cable kit, but special precautions need to be taken as they can be a fire hazard if not used properly.

Keep yourself and your pipes warm this winter!  If you do notice a small leak, shut off the water that services that pipe, when possible.  If not, calling a licensed plumber as soon as possible can help prevent damage.  If you come home to a situation as the picture above, there are water mitigation companies able to help and offer 24 hour emergency services to help with cleanup and prevent mold.
